Aside from the corporate side of things, the production company has announced some bad news and even more bad news. While there are shows and films that have been pushed to a later release date, there are titles like Batgirl that have been ultimately shelved despite being completed. As for the fate of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, things aren’t that bad. Warner Bros. Discovery has pushed back the release of the Shazam! sequel to a later date. So when will you be able to watch the movie in theaters? Here are more details.
When Is Shazam! Fury of the Gods Coming Out?
To note, this isn’t the first time that the Shazam! sequel’s release date has been pushed to a later date. Originally, the plan was to release the movie on April 1, 2022. But because of tightened restrictions brought about by a new surge of the COVID-19 pandemic, the release date was moved to November 4, 2022, and again to June 2, 2023. Warner Bros. Discovery then decided to move Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ release date to December 16, 2022. But because this would coincide with the release date of Avatar: The Way of Water, Shazam!’s release date was moved to December 21, 2022. But just recently, the production company announced some changes to its holiday season lineup. As a way of spreading out its marketing and distribution costs, Warner Bros. Discovery moved the release date of both Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The new Shazam! release date schedule takes over the March 17, 2023 schedule initially allotted for Aquaman 2. And unfortunately, the Aquaman sequel has been moved to a much later date: December 25, 2023. Hopefully, this is the final schedule that they will stick with.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods Director Reaction to Date Change
While the fans who have been anxiously waiting for the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods may feel discouraged about this decision, but it actually makes a lot of sense; at least for director David F. Sandberg. Turning to voice his frustrations on Twitter, Sandberg says there is a silver lining to the corporate decision: “While I’m an impatient bastard who wants people to see it as soon as possible (the film will be fully done in just a few weeks), the move makes sense since Avatar was taking all IMAX/PLF screens. Fury of the Gods is a big movie & should be seen big!” It’s also important to note that Sandberg mentions “the film will be fully done in just a few weeks.” This could indicate that we’ll be getting another trailer with more footage. After all, part of the reason why the production company decided to push the movie’s release date was to extend its advertising campaign. But hey, at least it’s not getting canceled like Batgirl.
