Now, it looks like development for the sequel is moving forward as TheDisInsider has reported that pop superstar Taylor Swift is being tapped to play the villain in Cruella 2 and her role is being described as “Cruella’s match.” In addition, they also heard that the film is being planned to be a musical.
So far, neither Disney nor the major trades have confirmed any of this information so we have to take it with a grain of salt for now. TheDisInsider also classified their report as a rumor although there have been whispers for the past few months regarding Swift’s potential involvement in the project.
With the fate of Emma Thompson’s character by the end of the first film, it looks like the sequel needs to have a new villain that Cruella will face. If this report turns out to be true, it is interesting to hear that Swift could play the villain and she is certainly going to be a great match for the character.
Considering that Stone has done musical roles in the past (particularly her Oscar-winning performance in La La Land), it wouldn’t be surprising if they’ll end up making the sequel a musical which would be a fun and different take that they can do on the iconic villain’s new story.
For now, we need to wait a little longer for any further confirmation regarding the rumor. Who knows, perhaps this coming D23 Expo, Disney might give us a more definitive update on the development of the much-awaited sequel.
