Netflix has released the official teaser trailer for del Toro’s stop-motion animated Pinocchio film which gave us a glimpse at the renowned filmmaker’s unique take and reinvention of the classic tale. It also showed us a look at the film’s 1930s Italy setting, the design of most of the main characters, and the familiar story which seems to lean towards the original source material more than the other adaptations.
You can check the teaser trailer below:
Based on the footage, the film looks magical and visually stunning, but at the same time, it also seems that it will be darker as well considering that it is under the helm of del Toro and set in one of the darkest moments in Italian history. Everything that they’ve shown looks very promising and it’s exciting to see what del Toro has in store for this new adaptation of the story that we know and love.
Set in Italy during the reign of Benito Mussolini, the film filters “Carlo Collodi’s original Italian novel through del Toro’s typically gothic lens. This filmmaker’s puppet is carved from the wood of a tree that grew over a young boy’s grave. When the boy’s father, Geppetto, wishes for a child to be returned to him, he gets a bit more than he bargained for with Pinocchio, a scraggly and unfinished wooden mannequin who happily injects an element of pure chaos into his new father’s life.”
The cast also includes Ewan McGregor, Gregory Mann, David Bradley, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, Finn Wolfhard, Ron Perlman, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, and John Turturro. Del Toro co-directed the film with Mark Gustafon.
