According to Deadline, series creator and writer Diane Ademu-John has stepped down as co-showrunner. She will remain involved creatively as an executive producer although she will also focus now on other commitments. As a result, Alison Schapker is now serving as the sole showrunner of the series. This is definitely a surprising and significant change in terms of the key creative players of the series since Ademu-John was heavily involved in the conception prior to its production. There is no exact reason stated regarding why she left the project. Despite Ademu-John’s exit, the series is still in good hands under its sole showrunner Schapker, an experienced TV writer and producer who worked on series such as Westworld, Altered Carbon, Scandal, The Flash, Fringe, Lost, and Alias. It also looks like the changes did not necessarily have a major effect in terms of the production side.
The series is set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides (as depicted in Dune) and it will follow the Harkonnen Sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit. Emmy winner Johan Renck is directing the first episode and serves as executive producer. Denis Villeneuve, who directs the Dune films, is also part of the executive producing team alongside Jon Spaihts, Scott Z. Burns, Matthew King, John Cameron, Cait Collins, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert. The cast includes Emily Watson, Shirley Henderson, Indira Varma, Travis Fimmel, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Faoileann Cunningham, Aoife Hinds, Chloe Lea, and Mark Strong.
